More than a Meal—Table Talk

If you were Santa Claus, what food (and drink) would you want kids to leave for you on Christmas Eve?

Stimulate conversation around your dinner table with some creative questions! My daughters always enjoy it when we pull out a pile of questions to ask and answer. We may draw a single question and each reply, or have someone draw a question and query whomever he or she chooses. This has been particularly meaningful at holiday time as extended family members and friends gather around the table.

I’ve used a number of sources for stimulating questions, and one of my favorites is a book entitled KidChat by Bret Nicholaus and Paul Lowrie (The Question Guys™). I started recording and dating the answers in the book because they were so creative! My daughters thoroughly enjoy it and now there are notations where the girls, and their friends, have answered questions. It reads like a timeline of their thoughts.

Here are some sample questions:

If just one time snow could fall in a color other than white, what color would you want it to be?

If you could have 50 pounds of anything you wanted this Christmas, what would you choose?

If you knew that beginning tomorrow you would be blind for one full year, what would you want to be sure to see today while you still had time?

If you could choose any person’s face to appear on a new dollar bill, what person’s face would you choose?
(Ashley answered, “Mine!”)

Other than either of your parents, who is one adult that you really have a lot of fun with? Why?

And the list goes on and on. We appreciate this book so much we decided to make it available on our website. They also have a Christmas-themed KidChat—perfect for holiday gift-giving as well as a source for stimulating conversation starters for your own holiday table.

Want to make your Cooking Among Friends® entrées extra-special? Dazzle your cooking club members by adhering a thought-provoking question to your entrées. Not only will they have a fabulous meal, but a terrific conversation starter to stimulate imaginations.

Awesome idea! Thanks so much for the tip!
